Munson vs. Posada

Who ranks higher all-time in the pantheon of great Yankee catchers, Thurman Munson or Jorge Posada????

Munson is one of my all-time favorite players, period, but looking at it objectively, it could go either way.

- They've got about the same amount of service and each (have) played their entire careers in pinstripes;

- Posada has 4 WS titles to Thurman's 2;

- Posada has been, perhaps, both the more dangerous offensive player and better defensive player (sure, Munson has three Gold Gloves to Posada's zero, but Jorge has played in the same league as Ivan Rodriguez his entire career; anecdotally, for me they are essentially equal defensively) during the regular season;

- Munson was the Captain for a reason - he was an ultimate leader (something Jorge is, but not to the same extent) and produced at a bit better clip in the postseason than Jorge has (and was a better baserunner as well);

- Munson was a 7-time all-star to Posada's 4, and Thurman has an MVP.

It swings either way for me, what about you?

This is a tough comparison to pick from. although I never saw Munson play I think I would still give a slight edge to Munson over Posada purely because I am not a huge fan of what I see from Posada. Yes he can hit and play good defense but the one thing that kills me about Posada is that he is ralley killer.

Munson has the mystique, Posada is not there yet but probably will never have that. To me Posada, from a Yankee fan persepective, is a love em hate em guy. However he does produce and if he were to get a few more seasons to put up what he has he would surpise Munson on the charts. For now have to go with Munson.
