Otto's List of the Week - 2008 Edition

Well its that time again, my lists of the week topic is being brought back due to popular (or just because I want to) demand!

To start of the new year I figured I would take the theme of ESPN's Sportcenter Top 10 Sports Higlights of All Time. ESPN is still compiling their's and when it becomes official I will post but here is my top 10 highlights...please contribute yours...

10. Billy Raftery's 'Send It In Jerome' - This one is an oldie but goodie and I love Raftery and I love the call, one of the best most explosive dunk calls in college B-Ball history
9. 1986 World Series Game 6 ending / Wilson's "dribbler up along first" and through Buckner's legs - I love this highlight because it captures the dark and wonderful days of Boston baseball. I frequently will try to find this highlight on YouTube when something good goes on for Boston like when they win a WS to bring me back to the way it was...then I smile and laugh for a minute remembering how awful Boston baseball USE to be!
8. Johnny Most's call "There's a steal by Bird underneath to DJ lays it up and In" - Another Boston highlight but its Johnny Most's emphazema voice thats so funny, I hated Bird growing up and the Celtics but I love this highlight.
7. "The Play" Cal/Standford - How can you leave this highlight out of your top 10 really. Yes they play this way too much these days and always celebrate its anniversary but it was one of the most spectacular things to ever take place in sports so I gotta put this one in there.
6. The Kid who made the half court shot on Midnight Madness for Books - Before Dicky V became really annoying I remember staying up to watch this Midnight Madness when he told the kid he would by him his books if he sank the half court shot and did and then you hear the "ohhhhh ohhhh ohhhhh" of Dicky V's voice, now annoying, back then classic!
5. McNamera at the Big East Tourney in '06 hitting a huge three against Uconn / Coach B's reaction in the press conference - This one is two fold but first you have Raftery with his great call in "ahhhhhhhh ONIONS" when McNamera hits the shot and then of course Boehiem's great quote of "we wouldn't have won 10 F-ing games...." another classic reel of highlights.
4. Jimmy (The Drunk) Lerityz's HR against Atlanta in Game 5 of the 1996 WS - I love this highlight because one it was the turning point of the first WS I witnessed the Yankees winning and two because of Buck's "back at the track at the...BOOOM...wall we are tied", great call great memory for me as a young yankee fan.
3. Aaron 'F-ing' Boone's HR against Boston game 7 2004 ALCS - Steinner's call will forever be etched into my memory and I will never forget running to my TV and Schof running out of my house and up the street screaming...one of the greatest moments in my life really!
2. Jordan hitting the shot over Ehlo / "The Bulls win it...they win it" - great highlight and I could have put a lot of Bulls and Jordan highlights in this list but this one kind of started everything for the Bulls and Jordan jumping up and down the way he did will always be a great moment.
1. Warrick's blocked shot in the '03 championship - This one is really self explanatory, once he reached out and blocked that shot I jumped up and then fell to my knees with emotion knowing that finally my beloved Orange'MEN' were going to win their long awaited for first championship...this highlight you will never be able to take away from me...I am sheding tears right now just remembering how great of a moment it was!

Kind of all over the board with this list but those truely are the best highlights I can remember...please list yours when you get a chance.

- Otto

Top 10 random highlights...no particular order.

Bo Jackson running over Brian Bosworth on MNF, which proved the AFC West was no Big 8.

Cameron Mills' three over Duke in the '98 NCAA Final 8 to cap a comeback to end all comebacks for UK. Later I partied at Woodland and Euclid to celebrate championship no.7.

Warrick's block to cement the first championship for Boeheim and erase memories of, well, we won't speak his name (KS are the initials if you're scoring at home)

Danny Ainge's mad dash for cash to knock off Notre Dame in the '81 NCAAs.

Iowa center and troglodyte Les Jepsen's mad dash for cash to beat Minnesota in the mid-90s at the buzzer. I think the Gophers were scared shitless by the sight of a slobbering Frankenstein racing toward them that they gave him a wide berth and stood in shock and awe as the ball fluttered in off the glass.

A little hockey representation...."Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!" to knock off the hated red menace and eventually end the most famous curse on ice.

Kirk Gibson's homer in the 88 World Series! Gotta have it.

Continuing with horsehide - Sid Bream overcoming a 7-second 40-yard-dash to beat the Pirates in the '92 NLCS.

From way back....Secretariat's romp in the '73 Belmont with Ron Turcotte looking over his shoulder at the rest of the pack lagging miles behind.

And last but not least - Reggie Miller giving the choke sign to Spike Lee after nailing a three vs. the Knicks in the '94 East Finals 'cause Spike is the most overrated director EVER.

I was thinking about the three most emotional moments I've ever had watching sports (chronologically): 1992 - Knowing that my beloved Cowpokes were finally going to bring it home while I was conscious of what was going on (when they had last won it, I wasn't really a fan of Dallas) [since it was a blowout SB, I'm not sure if there is one highlight I can point to, but rather just that feeling of ultimate exhilaration; 1994 - Seeing the helmet-less Craig MacTavish cheat his way through a face-off and watch 13 tenths of second tick away on a 54 year old curse; 2003 - Seeing Kueth Duany (?) reach up and grab Kirk Hinrich's errant last second shot out of the air. Ah yes, the pure, unadulterated JOY.

Kicking myself now as I recall one more.....screaming down the halls of my dorm "HE MISSED THE KICK! HE MISSED THE KICK!" as the G-MEN!!! sent Parcells off in style.

Bald and RomoCop...good lists there.

Yes the one I forgot was Scott Nor-wide Right...that made my all time best championship moments, I was 11but I remember running around the house with my brother going nuts when they beat the bills because I hate the Bills!!!

I also would put in my HM list the performance of Messier against the Devils in '94 to put the team on his back and win there first cup in 54 years (closet Rangers fan although I don't follow hockey as much as I use to).
Another highlight I left out is back in '97 when at that time potential heisman canidate Charles Woodson returned a punt against I believe it was Ohio State up in the Big House and then emulated the famous heisman pose of his former Michigan and Heisman winning alum D. Howard.

And Bald Wonder...I remember partying in the halls of Euclid myself...however had I run into you running around joyful at Kentucky winning another stupid national championship probably wouldn't have been a good site!!! I can only wonder what you did in '96??? Or maybe I don't want to know!!!

Good lists fellas...

You bring up a good point Otto...it was a bit sad b/c as Romo will attest to I grew up a HUGE Syracuse fan. I will say it was nuts..overturned news vans, multiple arrests and my friend falling twelve feet onto the parking lot of Lynagh's Pub from the Lynagh's sign.
