With less than four hours to go in 2007 we have some big drops and the droppers of the droppees drop in. I swear I haven't been drinking.
1 - Memphis - they handled a strong Arizona team.
2 - North Carolina - it's pretty obvious that the Heels and Tigers are the class of college hoops so far.
3 - Kansas
4 - Washington State - Holding any team to 34 points for the game is impressive. A tough Pac-10 opening schedule starts at Bruce Lee U.
5 - Duke
6 - Tennessee
7 - Texas A & M
8 - Texas - Still like this team a lot. Wisconsin drives the cheeseheads crazy at times b/c they could lose a game to a team like Northwestern but also beat a team like this.
9 - Indiana
10 - Michigan State
11 - UCLA
12 - Georgetown
13 - Marquette
14 - Butler
15 - Vanderbilt - Ripped an Iona team which was much worse than they were on paper. That's what an undefeated team should do.
16 - Ole Miss - What madness is this? Three teams from the SEC in the top 16? Zounds!!
17 - Villanova
18 - St. Mary's - Doubt many people would have said this was the best team in the West Coast Conference.
19 - Dayton - Brian Roberts might be the best shooting guard in the country.
20 - Brigham Young - Boise State isn't a bad team - should be the WAC rep to the Dance.
21 - Pitt - WAY too many injuries. It's a shame
22 - Stanford
23 - Arizona - Shows they have a way to go to keep up with the elite but should be in the mix in the Pac-10.
24 - Gonzaga - Might be the last we see of the Zags.
25 - Rhode Island - Interesting story. In 1988, I was singing the Rams praises to the masses during the days leading up to the NCAA Tournament insisting they would beat Missouri in the 1st round. After nearly getting my ass kicked from constantly running my mouth I was then hung by my ankles off the bridge overlooking the Chenango River after the Rams knocked off Syracuse in round 2 as I wrongly accused of creating a monster.
Well enough wistfulness. Enjoy a prosperous new year and look for the brackets in two weeks!!

That wasn't me on the bridge was it? :)
Hey Salati - DuJuan Blair is the best frosh in the country? Are we still living in a country with Michael Beasley [24 and 14]?!?!?!?
Excuse me, DeJuan Blair.
Actually Xavier shut down Beasley the other night - figure that team out. But Pitt better hope Blair comes to play - right now they're in a tussle w/Lafayette?!?
If I remember correctly you and the Chupkas were quite irate at my Rhode Island ramblings during that time period. At least the Rams are doing it clean w/out Harrick's treating the NCAA rulebook as if it were toilet paper.
RomoCop:
I stated that Blair right now is shaping up to be one of the best Frosh in the country and am thoroughly impressed with his play. Beasley was shut down by Xavier, I am not saying Beasley is bad certainly can be considered one of the best but Blair is coming out of the gates right now and is an MVP in terms of Pitt and not having one of there best players this year out with injury. He is not going to score like Beasley but he will put forth the intangeables and I think Pitt is going to go deep this year because they are well coached and because Blair is performing better than expected. He is SHAPING up to be one of the best Frosh this year!
Hey El Baldo, easy with the Iona comments...although Otto bleeds orange he attended Iona as an undergrad...yeah they suck and are heading towards another terrible year but lay off them a bit with there former great Ruland who was canned on cell phone call while on a boat in the Carribean there recruiting has been disaterous. Be sympathetic, if Willard is like his father in terms of coaching they may be back on top in the MAAC sooner than later. Dark days for the Gaels right now!!!
Iona has had some great years in the past but they should have handled the Ruland situation much better - if Willard takes some of his dad's and Pitino's knowledge with him they should turn it around - the great thing about those conferences is it's easier to overcome adversity - you're not stuck at the bottom for long.
Plus my alma mater is stuck at 238 RPI. Yikes!! I see a 15-year NCAA streak coming to an end.
Hey, Beasley still had a dozen rebounds, a coupla steals and a blocked shot . . . he only attempted 6 shots which tells me he was the subject of some serious double and, perhaps, triple teaming.
No doubt Beasily is among the best in his class this year...if Blair can do somethings and help Pitt out after some of the injuries they have suffered I would make him the MVP of college b-ball.
Yes Baldo I agree if Willard took some good insight from Pitino and his pops he can turn Iona around because the good thing about a school that close to the city is you get a lot of good recruits from the area that might get over looked by the big schools, Iona is a hot spot for good talent from the city and hopefully they can build a reputation under Willard that can get them going again!!!
