Monk: 940 receptions, 12,721 yards, 68 touchdowns, member of four Super Bowl teams
Irvin: 750 receptions, 11,904 yards, 65 touchdowns, member of three Super Bowl teams
On top of that...Irvin is a punk ass jerk and Monk is a model human. How is Michael Irvin in the hall of fame before Art Monk. Its an absolute disgrace and those who voted for Irvin and not Monk should never be allowed to vote again. There is no logical consistency there given the above. Those who voted for Irvin and not Monk are a disgrace to sports.
Thoughts???

Being a SU fan, and on that note, bias...I also would have to agree that Monk gets in before Irvin.
Monk to me was the biggest among receivers in the game between 1985 to about 1991/92 along with Rice who is untouchable, Monk may have been the second best receiver during that time. He was dominant but I only take into affect his superbowls he won with the Redskins...so to me its 3 vs the Irvin 3 which would still gets him into the hall first.
The one down fall is that Irvin was more of a big time big game producer and he ran his mouth like a typical hamster (aka negro, which should never get you in to the super bowl)...
Monk was not outlandish, nor flashy, was a quiet upstanding player who gained the respect of all other players...but I think Irvin stuck out more and was a huge time player on one of the best teams to play the game on that '92 Cowboys (as much as it sickens me to say that)
However I was somewhat shocked when Irvin got in and Monk was left off again. But if Harry Carson can get in, I am sure Monk will in the next few years...it seems a bit easier these days to make the hall in football rather than baseball!!!
Very simply, the fact that Irvin got in before Monk is troublesome in the sense that Monk should've been in years ago . . . that being said, they BOTH deserve to be in . . . in addition, Irvin, off-field conduct aside, was the better player . . .
The Playmaker is one of only two wideouts that I actually thought were better than Jerry Rice for a certain (albeit small) period of time during Rice’s prime (the other being Al Toon) . . . Irvin doesn’t quite have the monster stats of some of the other guys of his era, including Monk, but its tough to argue against the role he played on those Cowboy teams, and, in all fairness, his career was cut short while he was still basically in the tail-end of his prime . . . he probably would have tacked on another 175 to 200 catches and another 2000 or so yards . . .
Irvin is one of the top 5 receivers I've ever seen:
(1) Rice
(2) Largent
(3) Lofton
(4) Irvin
(5) Brown
(6) Carter
(7) Moss
(8) Owens
Presumably, both Moss and Owens will end up higher on this list . . .
I'm not sure whether I would rank Monk in my personal top 10, but I wouldn't rank him ahead of any of these guys . . .
Taking a look at the Monk/Irvin stat comparison a little closer:
Monk caught 4.2 passes per game for an average of 56.8 yards per game (13.5 yards per catch), and 0.3 TDs per game . . .
Irvin caught 4.7 passes per game for an average of 74.9 yards per game (15.9 yards per catch) and 0.4 TDs per game . . .
Monk was a 2-time All-Pro and 3-Time Pro-Bowler . . .
Irvin was a 1-Time All-Pro and 5-time Pro Bowler . . .
Both were members of their respective decade's All-Decade Team . . .
While Monk was one of the great possession receivers of all-time, Irvin was a dominating game breaker . . . I'll take Irvin . . .
HE'S STILL A PUNK ASS, COKE SNORTING, HOTEL ROOM SKANK BANGING, TERRELL OWENS SUPPORTING, LOUD MOUTH N..... WHO NEEDS TO SHUT HIS MOUTH AND GET FIRED FROM ESPN.
that said, I too am not arguing he shouldn't have made the hall...but before Monk, who retired with multiple receiving records...no, not before Monk.
It does sort of depend though . . . many of those voting may be first time voters who have not had a chance to vote or not vote for Monk in the past . . .
Taken in a vacuum, if I was a first-time voter who had a choice between the two, I'm taking the "Playmaker" anyday . . . coke whores aside . . .
You love those coke whores don't ya???
Monk - you take because he is the quiet respectable guy
Irvin - you take because he is the playmaker...A big time Hamster, but a playmaker!!!
